The Greek island of Corfu - Queen of the Ionian Islands

Corfu, located near the coast of Albania in the northern Ionian Sea, is the second largest island in the Ionian archipelago. The northern part of the island is characterised by its mountainous terrain and coastline with numerous bays. The highest peak, Pantokrator, rises 906 m above sea level. Corfu’s mountainous landscape harmonises picturesquely with the blue hue of the sea and the green of cypress trees, olive groves, vineyards and citrus plantations.

The island of Corfu through the eyes of famous people

Corfu was called a Greek paradise by writers Johann Wolfgang and Oscar Wilde. Shakespeare described its beautiful green olive groves in The Tempest. However, it was the brothers Lawrence and Gerald Durrell, who in the 1930s settled here with their family and described all that Corfu has to offer, that contributed most to the island’s fame. Their books made this Greek island famous all over the world.

The charms of Corfu were also appreciated by Empress Sisi, who had a summer residence built on the island in the 19th century. Empress Sisi’s favourite place was Pontikonissi, or Mysia Island, where there is a small Byzantine church dating back to the 12th century. One legend has it that this is the ship of Odysseus, which was turned to stone by Poseidon.
